A Word About Private Fireworks Shows

Hi folks – just taking a quick break from trying to frantically update THREE sites (yea, we’re doing Ohio Fireworks and Indiana Fireworks now, if you missed it) over the next two weeks, so I probably won’t be posting updates and complete schedules quite as often as I did last year.  But I did want to talk briefly about private fireworks shows.

Private shows are generally run by an entity (such as a country club, lake association, or similar) for their members only.  Sometimes they are easily viewable from the area, and sometimes they are not.  Sometimes the general public is welcome to attend, but often the event is for members only.

I have always been torn about posting private displays.  On the one hand, sometimes they are widely viewable from the area, the organization putting them on posts the information publicly in some conspicuous place on its website, and often the members themselves send me the information and ask to have it posted.

On the other hand, I have gotten hate mail, been called all kinds of nasty names, threatened with lawsuits and worse, and accused of ruining people’s lives and businesses because I posted a display that was supposed to remain private (although I have never ever posted a display where the information was otherwise publicly available)

Because I don’t want to lead anyone on, and I really don’t like getting that kind of email, I’m going to phase out posting private shows.  We all know they’re there, usually anywhere there’s a lake or a country club in the area, and so you can always go look it up somewhere if you want to.  There’s still a few listed here, but I won’t be updating them in the future.

If a private organization WANTS me to post their show, I will do so, but I will have to have confirmation by some one representing that organization.

Hope you all understand.

Meg

To avoid the crybabies legal threats, just post a "warning" about the event. You could post things such as "If you're going to be driving past the Snobby Acres Country Club this 4th of July be careful to avoid the potentially heavy traffic and danger of stray fireworks between dusk and 11:00 pm." That way you are not implying that you are encouraging peasants and commoners ;) to attend!
